Victims and damage from Cyclone Freddy higher than expected

Lilongwe, Mar 14 (Prensa Latina) The President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera has declared that the south of this country is today under a state of disaster, due to the devastation caused by the second hurricane, Freddy.

The death toll, which until hours ago included 15 people, is now estimated at more than 60, a provisional balance due to the dozens of people missing. The material damage continues to be counted and whose magnitude is esteemed to be high considering that the the storm devastated the city of Blantyre, the country’s commercial center.

The Malawi government appealed to the international community for help to those affected by the heavy rains, which caused floodings, and the destructive fury of the meteor’s accompanying winds, whose trajectory and duration are surprising specialists.

After hitting several countries in mid-Africa, Freddy returned to the same area last weekend with the same destructive force that has guaranteed it a place in the record books.
