Malawi mourns hundreds of Cyclone Freddy victims

Lilongwe, Mar 16 (Prensa Latina) Malawi observes Thursday the first of 14 days of national mourning, government decreed in remembrance of 225 people killed in Mozambique during the onslaught of Cyclone Freddy a few days ago.

In addition to the deaths and internal displacement of thousands of people, the phenomenon’s heavy rains and winds destroyed hundreds of homes, washed away crops, damaged infrastructure, and triggered mud and rock avalanches.

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera,. on Wednesday. attended a funeral ceremony of the victims of Cyclone Freddy in Blantyre, the second largest city and the country’s leading financial hub.

Malawi is in a state of disaster (…) What Cyclone Freddy has done is to pull us back even when we were trying to rebuild after past tragedies, the president said during his funeral speech.

In addition to Malawi, neighboring Mozambique also suffered a second merciless hit of Cyclone Freddy, killing 20 persons, and other dozens died when, for the first time, the meteor hit Madagascar and the French Oversea Territory of Reunion Islands.
