Theft of potent drug in Panama sets off alarms

caja-seguro-panama
Panama City, Mar 16 (Prensa Latina) The loss of 10,000 doses of fentanyl from Panama's Social Security Fund (CSS) puts security agencies on alert and points out to the lack of control in the public entity. CSS director Enrique Lau admitted the theft of fentanyl in a report.

This opioid drug is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.

A press release states that the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) was informed as soon as “an anomalous situation was detected in one of its executing units.”

The Attorney General’s Office maintains an open investigation for the presumed commission of crimes against the public administration, referring to officials who neglected controls in handling medication in healthcare centers.

Meanwhile, CSS former director Alfredo Martiz said fentanyl is a “compulsive” drug, and a two-milligram dose “is already lethal.”
