China puts a hydrogen-powered ship into operation

China puts a hydrogen-powered ship into operation

Beijing, Mar 21 (Prensa Latina) China put into operation its first ship propelled with hydrogen cells and thus took a new step in the development of ecological technologies for means of transport, the local press reported today.

According to the Global Times newspaper, the ship provides service in the town of Zhongshan, in the southern province of Guangdong, and the innovative system supplies 500 kilowatts of energy to travel at a maximum speed of 28 kilometers per hour.

It has official certification for its operations and in the future will be used for transport, patrol and emergency work at the Three Gorges and Gezhouba dams.

China Yangtze Power began building the sailboat last May and, apart from the hydrogen cells, it is backed by lithium batteries and other systems that reduce noise and pollution while it travels.

In short terms, China plans to increase the fleet of ships with this technology, as it moves toward its goal of a sustainable low-carbon economy by mid-century.
