The ceremony highlighted the brotherly relationship between the two nations, sealed by the victory in that heroic deed on March 5, 1978, when Cuban and Ethiopian troops preserved the independence and territorial integrity of the African country from the expansionist efforts by neighboring Somalia.
A wreath was laid at the Colon Cemetery, at the pantheon of those who fell in that battle, by a group of Ethiopian graduates from various specialties in Cuba, and Cubans who in the last 48 years fulfilled internationalist mission in Ethiopia.
The leader of the so-called movement of Ethiopian-Cubans, Anteneh Berhanu, read a letter from the Ethiopian concurrent ambassador to Cuba, Genet Teshome Jirru, who reaffirmed the Ethiopian Government’s willingness to strengthen bilateral relations in health care, education, agricultural technology and multilateral cooperation, among other areas.
Cuba’s solidarity beyond the Karramara epic, its role in the international sphere and in Africa, especially cooperation with medical brigades and professionals from other disciplines in that continent, were acknowledged by the speakers at the commemoration.
