Montevideo, Mar 23 (Prensa Latina) In Uruguay 818 persons committed suicide in 2022, according to preliminary data release from the Ministry of Public Health (MSP).

The number exceeds that of 2021 by 8%. That year, 758 people committed suicide, this, considered a problem, is a steady upward trend since 2017, according to El Observador newspaper.

The suicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants reached a record height in 2022 and even surpasses that of the 2002 economic crisis.

In the last year, the preliminary rate was 23.08 suicides per 100 thousand when the previous year it had been 21.39.

Among the 818 suicides, there was an increase in the 45-49 age range with 17 more people compared to 2021.

It also grew among those aged 30 to 34, with 14 more cases.

After taking office recently, the Minister of Health, Karina Rando, said that in her administration there would focus on mental health care.

The same was said by President Luis Lacalle Pou, who urged to give priority attention to the issue of addictions.
