China warns of countermeasures for Taiwanese leader’s stop in US

Beijing, Mar 29 (Prensa Latina) on Tuesday, China protested and warned that it would proceed with countermeasures if Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen makes a stopover in the United States and meets with local politicians on their way to Central America.

The Taiwan Affairs Office of the Council of State called on US authorities to refrain from coordinating transit visits for the president and scheduling meetings with any officials in Los Angeles.

The agency demanded that Washington demonstrate with concrete actions the compliance with its commitment to not support Taiwan’s independence aspirations.

It also pointed out that China would respond with “firm countermeasures” if Tsai finally meets with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on April 5.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that China would closely monitor the situation and defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
