Ecuadorian parliament to decide on political trial against Lasso

Quito, Mar 30 (Prensa Latina) The future of the president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, is in the hands of the National Assembly, which must process the impeachment request approved the day before by the Constitutional Court.

The Court rejected the accusations of concussion against the president and accepted the request to impeach him politically for the crime of embezzlement.

The presidency General Secretariat in Communication issued a statement in which it respects the Court’s decision, despite disagreeing with it, and ensures that the Assembly’s approach never had any legal or political support and never will.

On the other hand, legislators and social organizations spoke in favor of approving the process that could bring forward the end of Lasso’s term.

“This trial is a symbol for a desperate and hopeless country, for the thousands of unemployed and the millions of Ecuadorians who stopped believing in democracy,” said congressman Virgilio Hernández.

The Citizen Revolution movement stressed that impeachment is a democratic expression in the face of a destroyed country and sentenced that “hope has been reborn.”

Assemblywoman Viviana Veloz, in charge of the investigations and one of the applicants for the trial, stated that now the president will have to answer for his horrors and incompetency. “We could not turn our backs on the Ecuadorian people,” she added.
