The EAC said in a statement that part of its units arrived in the town when the insurgent March 23 Movement (M23) withdrew from Bunagana, as a result of a regional initiative region to achieve peace and stability in eastern Congo.
In the last hours, commanders of the peacekeeping mission in Democratic Congo have said that the presence of Kampala forces in Bunagana, an important city in the province of North Kivu, occupied by the M23 since June 2022, will allow to guarantee the protection of the local population.
They said that the peacekeeping troops, in addition to verifying the withdrawal of the M23 militiamen, will open and make the road linking the cities of Bunagana and Goma safer.
Such a pronouncement comes after the spokesman for the insurgent group, Willy Ngoma, declared that on Friday the rebel forces will leave Bunagana.
