Panama evaluates firefighters’ demands after strike

Panama City, Mar 31 (Prensa Latina) A high-level commission of the Panamanian Government evaluates today the demands for better conditions for the Fire Brigade, in national strike 24 hours ago.

The meeting at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) will have to respond on the budgetary resources to attend most of the requests.

The strike is due to the fact that the authorities have not complied with the disbursement of US$ 2.9 million for the payment of promotions.

In addition, internal audits are being carried out to avoid injustices, and specific recommendations are being prepared for an administrative modernization of the entire institution.

An official communiqué states that the Executive has absolute confidence in the responsible and professional behavior of the firefighters, who safeguard Panamanians, at the risk of their own lives.

The Government Ministry stated that it has been able to establish the real level of the internal administrative problem in the institution, the way in which the promotions were given and the effective availability of economic resources to face these promotions of rank. ef/abo/mem/ga
