Cuban youth organizations mark anniversary

UJC
Havana, Apr 4 (Prensa Latina) Cubans on Tuesday are marking the 61st anniversary of the Young Communist League (UJC) and the 62nd anniversary of the Jose Marti Young Pioneers' Organization (OPJM) with a variety of activities in all provinces.

To celebrate the date, the UJC called to hold a world message action through Twitter from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, local time, using hashtags #UnaMejorJuventud, #Cuba, and #UJC.

On Monday, more than 200 young people across the country climbed up “Caballetes de Casa”, a historic site, where the “Ciro Redondo Column No. 8”, commanded by Argentinian-Cuban guerrilla fighter Ernesto Che Guevara, was located at the Escambray mountain range in central Cuba.

The UJC emerged in 1962, and its direct predecessor was the Association of Young Rebels. It is currently the political vanguard organization of the Cuban youth, a continuation of the Communist Party of Cuba, and the leading source for joining its ranks.

The OPJM, which brings together elementary and high school students, was founded in 1961. Among other things, it works to develop the student’s interest in studies and also a sense of social responsibility in its members.

On November 8, 1961, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, said, “The youth of Cuba has played an important role, a role that perhaps no other youth has ever played in education and defense of the country.”

At this moment, the Cuban new generations have occupied an essential place in the country’s economic, social, and political development.
