Ecuador´s SNAI reports fresh unrests in la Roca prison

Quito, Apr 4 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador´s National Service of Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) reported on Tuesday new unrest at La Roca maximum security prison, located in the city of Guayaquil, where security protocols have been activated.

According to local media, at least three inmates died in the riots, although SNAI has not made this figure official.

In 2022, the President Guillermo Lasso administration promoted a prison restructuring, and in response a series of riots were conducted.

Ecuador is currently facing up an insecurity crisis the Government blames local mafias closely related to drug trafficking.

In the last two years, prison massacres have left over 400 inmates dead.

Different gangs including Los Chone Killers, Los Choneros, Los Lobos and Los Tiguerones control drug trafficking from penitenciaries, while law enforcement officials claimed to have seized more than 200 tons of drugs in 2022.
