Deaths increase during Holy Week in El Salvador

San Salvador, Apr 5 (Prensa Latina) At least 11 people died in the first days of the Holy Week vacations, authorities of the General Management of Civil Protection of El Salvador confirmed today.

Seven of the deaths were registered in traffic accidents and four drowned in private properties in the country, according to the sources.

Only on Monday, 47 traffic accidents were reported, while the police arrested 28 drunk drivers in the first days of the religious festivity, according to the vice-minister of Transportation, Nelson Reyes.

‘We already have 28 drivers detained this Holy Week season. If a person is found with more than 100 mg/dl of alcohol in exhaled air, this person will be arrested for the crime of dangerous driving’, he added.

Comparatively, there is an increase in the number of deaths due to drowning in private places, since last year there were two, while in 2023 the number is already four.

There are also more traffic accidents recorded in the first three days of the week from 142 in 2022 to 147 this year, according to Civil Protection.
