Chilean Congress approves historic reduction in working hours

Santiago de Chile, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) The Chilean Chamber of Deputies approved today the bill to gradually reduce the working day from 45 to 40 hours a week, considered a conquest for workers.

The initiative was adopted by a large majority and was ready for promulgation by the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric.

The project foresees that the reduction in the working day will take place between now and 2028 and includes other benefits, such as the increase in payment of overtime worked when necessary.

It contains another series of advantages, including the possibility of working four days a week and resting three, in addition to offering facilities in the schedule for caregivers of children and adolescents up to 12 years of age.

The idea was promoted in 2017 by the then deputy and current Minister Secretary General of Government, Camila Vallejo, and also a legislator Karol Cariola, both from the Communist Party of Chile (PCCh).

The Minister of Labor, Jeannette Jara, of the PCCh, described this moment as very important and greeted all the workers who, from the room and outside the National Congress, supported this measure.

She recalled that the initiative had six long years of paperwork and its adoption was preceded by a debate process, where citizens had an important participation.

Having passed the last procedure in the National Congress, the government announced that it will be promulgated for its entry into force on May 1, International Workers’ Day.
