Respect and admiration, distinctive hallmarks of Cuba-Cambodia ties

camboya-abril-23
Phnom Penh, Apr 12 (Prensa Latina) Respect, admiration and identification of common goals of progress, despite geographical distance, are hallmarks of relations between Cuba and Cambodia, Ambassador Liurka Rodriguez said here on Wednesday.

At a meeting with members of the Association of Cambodian Graduates in Cuba (ACGC), diplomats, sports collaborators and Cuban residents in the Kingdom, Rodriguez stressed that these ties, established more than six decades ago, also have “a key historic component.”

The Cuban diplomat listed the main milestones since Havana and Phnom Penh established diplomatic relations on April 15, 1960, and particularly highlighted the exchange of visits between the respective prime ministers in 2022.

She noted the dialogue at the highest level between authorities from both nations and cooperation agreements in health care, sports and culture, among other fields, she said.

Cambodia’s commitment to continuing to support Cuba in its just demand for an end to the intensified economic, financial and commercial blockade of the United States was expressed by ACGC Honorary President Hen Chanly, who also advocated to continue to join the efforts in favor of boosting cooperation.

In this effort, he noted that Cuba can certainly count on the graduates from the Caribbean island as a faithful bastion.

Addressing the audience, AGCC President Borin Khieu expressed, in his opinion in a few words but with a lot of heart, the work of the Cuba Solidarity Movement, which has accompanied the Latin American nation all the time.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen visited Havana in September 2022, becoming the first senior leader from the Kingdom to travel to the Caribbean island since Cuba’s access to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).

On the occasion, Hun Sen and Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel witnessed the signing of several agreements in the healthcare, sports and international relations sectors.

The Cambodian head of Government also met with the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Raul Castro, and recalled his visit to Cuba in 1999, when he was awarded with the Jose Marti Order by the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro.

Weeks later, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero traveled to Cambodia, where he was received by His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni, with whom he discussed the close friendship between Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro and the Cambodian King’s father, Norodom Sihanouk.
