International support for activists detained in El Salvador

San Salvador, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) Organizations in El Salvador appealed to the international community for the release of activists in Cabañas, detained for their opposition to the repeal of the mining prohibition law.

A statement said that the inhabitants of that region of Santa Martha launched an international support campaign to demand prompt justice and the release of the six former fighters arrested more than three months ago accused of an alleged war crime, behind which hides the interest of the mining companies to reopen the exploitation of these resources, they said.

The president of the Association of Economic and Social Development of Santa Marta (ADES Santa Marta), Vidalina Morales, explained that among the actions to demand the release of their six fellow community leaders are: sit-ins in front of the Embassy of El Salvador in Washington, United States, as well as in front of the embassies of Canada and Honduras.

They will also send their message to other nations such as Bolivia, the Philippines, Spain and England, as a way to demand the release of the activists who defend the environment, specifically against metallic mining.

The detention of the six “has nothing to do with the government’s intention to bring justice to the victims of the war, but rather with a systematic campaign of criminalization to demobilize the organized communities of Cabañas that could oppose an eventual repeal of the mining prohibition law”, the organizations maintained.
