Unions ask ILO to visit Costa Rica

San Jose, Apr 28 (Prensa Latina) The United Trade Union Movement on Thursday requested the International Labor Organization (ILO) to send a high-level delegation to Costa Rica to learn about the threats to social security.

The invitation, which is urgent, seeks that ILO experts carry out an independent actuarial assessment of the Health Insurance of Costa Rica’s Social Security Fund (CCSS), to generate confidence and tranquility to the local population.

According to Bloque Unitario Sindical y Social Costarricense and the Central Unions, the CCSS is a property of Costa Ricans, thanks to the fact that since 1940’s visionary constituents understood the importance of healthcare for the people, with tools that prevent political intervention in order to guarantee its permanence.

Therefore, the United Trade Union Movement of Costa Rica assures that only the ILO can make reliable studies, so that future generations can enjoy the fundamental right to public health, provided by the CCSS.

“We hope that the ILO understands the urgency of this challenge and responds positively to the request of the Costa Rican working class,” the union text stresses.

It highlighted that the request responds to the furious attacks faced by the CCSS from the Government, its legislative faction and the illegitimate current Board of Directors.

It states that “the unjustified assertion that the Fund is bankrupt without any proof, the sustained harassment and denunciations about the serious inconsistencies of the actuarial studies and the maneuvers to discredit, dismantle and privatize this emblematic institution, merit immediate action.”

Therefore, it considers that the ILO generates more confidence, because it is an example of tripartism and social dialogue, which in decades has accumulated unquestionable experience in the development and application of methodologies and an impeccable trajectory in actuarial work in social security in the world.
