Italy expands video surveillance system with facial recognition

videovigilancia
Rome, May 2 (Prensa Latina) Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi reportedly considers promoting an extensive video surveillance system with facial recognition in cities such as Rome, Milan, and Naples.

Piantedosi told Quotidiano Nazionale that “the video surveillance system is a fundamental tool” and added that “its gradual expansion is an objective shared by all mayors”.

The announcement generated criticism from opposition sectors, which considers that the measure violates privacy, Filippo Sensi said on behalf of the Democratic Party.

Sensi announced in a message on Twitter, published on the Fanpage website on Tuesday, “I regret to inform the interior minister that facial recognition in public places is not currently allowed in our country, as a moratorium prohibits it until late 2023.”

Given the questions, Piantedosi maintained that facial recognition “is a fundamental tool” that “opens new and significant possibilities for prevention and investigation,” so they are seeking an alternative to this moratorium with the Office of the Guarantor for the Protection of Personal Data.
