Petro condemns violence, ponders peace and development in Colombia

Madrid, May 5 (Prensa Latina) Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Friday condemned the historic violence that drags his country and continues in other latitudes, and pondered a peace and development agenda.

Speaking at the New Economy Forum at a hotel in Madrid, Petro noted that “the famous Pablo Escobar pales before the power of the current mafia organizations, which no longer have farms or haciendas only, but also territories,” he said in reference to the problems that persist in Colombia.

“When a criminal group has power, genocide is unleashed, said Petro, adding that there are elements that are difficult to distinguish, with immense transnational power.

“If we want Colombia to break away from drug trafficking and violence, we have to hand over land to the peasants,” he noted, after assuring that mafia organizations have political power and control territories through the use of private armies in the coffee-growing country.

In this regard, he emphasized the need for an agrarian reform “like the one in Spain or Europe,” an antidote to drug trafficking and violence in Colombia, which has become “the main exporter of cocaine for a few decades.”

“We have a very unequal land tenure structure, which is why it [Colombia] is one of the most unequal countries, because it is a kind of 21st century feudalism,” he claimed.
