United Nations Peacekeepers clear minefields in Lebanon

Beirut, May 11 (Prensa Latina) Almost 13 million square meters of land are today free of explosive devices in Lebanon, as part of the demining process promoted here by the United Nations Interim Force. (Unifil).

Through its Twitter account, the international command highlighted the continuous stage of land clearance so that their owners can cultivate and use them again.

To date, Unifil brigades cleared cluster bombs, anti-personnel mines and other unexploded munitions on Lebanese soil, as a result of the war against Israel.

Despite these results, the peacekeepers warned about the threat of landmines and other unexploded devices and reiterated the unceasing search for remnants of armed conflict.

Since 2006, Unifil has systematically cleared minefields along the Blue Line to allow access and the maintenance of blue barrel markers.

According to the pan-Arab Al Mayadeen channel, after the withdrawal of Tel Aviv forces from the southern and western Bekaa areas in 2000 the presence of hundreds of thousands of mines and unexploded munitios in the ground, have prevented construction, development and return to a life settlement.

Despite Israel’s refusal to hand over maps to international associations and organizations, Lebanon is making intensive efforts to clear mines and clear more than 80 percent of the total land. in a short period.

On March 19, 1978, the UN Security Council established the international command to confirm the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, as well as to restore international peace and security.
