Arrest of Bolivian Minister reaffirms government’s “zero tolerance”

La Paz, May 17 (Prensa Latina) The arrest of former Bolivian Environment and Water Minister Juan Santos for alleged corruption confirms the national government's policy of zero tolerance for these crimes.

Santos is involved in the process for the alleged commission of the crime of illicit enrichment through acts of corruption.

Susana Ríos, vice head of Institutional Transparency confirmed that the investigations into the so-called “Coimas case” have made significant progress in the context of the fight against corruption.

Ríos explained that the file was activated after learning more on the matter from some publications on social networks, in January 2023, for which the property requirements to Real Rights and the vehicle ownership control office were initiated.

The purchase of real estate and irregular movements of the bank accounts of two people, who are already detained, were verified in April after extensive requests, Ríos confirmed.

Santos was supposed to appear this Wednesday before the prosecutors investigating the Coimas case, but he voluntarily appeared 24 hours before and after a seven-hour interrogation was transferred to the Police National Department of Investigations of Illicit Gains.

Prosecutor Franklin Aborda declared on Tuesday, before representatives of the media that Santos appeared this Tuesday at 08:30 local time and was questioned. He added that the Public Ministry will present a formal accusation as appropriate, which will be reported in a timely manner, however, he did not explain whether the precautionary imprisonment against the resigning former minister will be detained or if he will be allowed to defend himself in freedom.
