Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso dissolves Parliament

Quito, May 17 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso on Wednesday announced the activation of the so-called cross death, a mechanism established in the Constitution that allows him to dissolve the National Assembly and bring forward presidential and legislative elections.

By virtue of Decree 741, the president gave way to the measure one day after the start of his impeachment for the crime of embezzlement in the unicameral Parliament.

“I have to respond to the political crisis that has trapped Ecuador,” the president said in a message broadcast on national television on Wednesday morning.

The cross death is a tool established in the Constitution that allows the head of State to dissolve the Congress, call general elections and rule by decree for six months.

Precisely, Lasso already announced the first of these decrees which refers to the economy, and requested the National Electoral Council (CNE) to call for elections of new authorities immediately.

“This is a democratic action, because it gives the power back to Ecuadorians to decide their future,” he emphasized.

There are questions to this decision, which some describe as illegal, because it must be justified in one of the grounds foreseen in law: if the National Assembly arrogates functions to itself, if the Legislative obstructs the National Development Plan, or due to a serious political crisis and internal commotion.
