56 women murdered last year in Chile

Santiago de Chile, May 19 (Prensa Latina) A total of 56 women murders occurred in Chile in 2022, according to a report published by "Red contra la Violencia hacia las Mujeres" ( Network against Violence towards Women), an organization considered one of the most active fighters facing these crimes.

The information added, that most of the victims were from the Santiago Metropolitan Region and died at the hands of their partners or ex-partners. Twenty-three of those women were between the ages of 30 and 44, and 14% were of other nationalities. The report also offered detailed information on each case, as well as on the frustrated crimes in each region.

The Network Against Violence is a group of activists and social organizations founded in 1990. These groups carry out complaint actions, studies and discussions so as to be aware of the issue and contribute to the struggle against femicide. Since 2007, it has conducted a nationwide campaign named: “¡Cuidado! El Machismo Mata”, (“Beware! Machismo kills!”).

The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, passed a law in May that offers support to the relatives of the victims and financial compensation to children underage.

Support will also be provided in cases when a woman decides to take her own life due to mistreatment, threats and other violent behavior from her partner.

This is “one more step in the fight in our country led by women against a scourge that not only ends the lives of its victims but also imposes an economic sentence on their families that is very difficult to bear,” the President said.

Deputy Karol Cariola, member of the Communist Party and one of the promoters of the legislation, declared that this is a significant contribution, aimed not only at making visible the consequences of gender violence but also at seeking reparations. “However, the State must take charge of the situation and prevent women from continuing to be murdered,” she said.
