Largest warship in the world arrives in Norway, Russia protests

Largest warship in the world arrives in Norway, Russia protests

Oslo, May 24 (Prensa Latina) The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford, considered the largest warship ever built, arrived today in Norway for a stopover, a fact denounced by the Russian government.

With more than 100,000 tons and 337 meters in length, the new generation nuclear-powered ship entered the Oslo Fjord in southern Norway in the morning hours with its escort to participate in military exercises which, according to local media, will be carried out in the Arctic Ocean.

The visit and presence of the naval air group will provide (…) a unique opportunity to develop cooperation and work more closely with our main ally, the United States, the Norwegian military explained in a statement.

There are no issues in the North that require a military solution, nor issues that need outside intervention, Russian embassy spokesman Timur Shekanov said. Since Oslo admits that Russia poses no direct military threat, such a show of force seems illogical and harmful to us, adds the Russian protest note released here.

Norway is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and shares 198 kilometers of land border with the Slavic country and a long border in the Barents Sea. ef/abo/mgt/ehl
