Chile reports a downturn in rural violence and irregular migration

Santiago de Chile, May 26 (Prensa Latina) Chile’s Interior Minister Carolina Toha on Friday reported a downturn in violence in the southern macro-area and a drop in irregular entries through unauthorized crossings at the country's borders.

During the annual accountability of this portfolio, the minister explained that many of the gangs dedicated to timber theft in regions such as La Araucania, Bio Bio and Los Rios were dismantled and the penalties increased for this crime .

In a press conference, held in the capital’s Lo Espejo district, Toha referred to the state of emergency in the southern zone and acknowledged that although it cannot be permanently extended, there are still no conditions for lifting it.

Regarding irregular migration, the minister announced that in the first five months of this year it decreased overall by 56 percent compared to the same period of 2022.

The official noted that the military carried out over 1,500 operations and 65,000 controls of people in northern Chile.

Concerning citizen security, she reported a 25 percent increase in inspections, going up the seizure of firearms, of which 2,633 are conventional and 1,174 are modified or adapted.

Carolina Toha made a balance of the Streets without Violence Plan applied in 65 domestic communes, where 65 percent of homicides are concentrated.

According to the official’s data, police forces carried out almost 55,000 preventive controls within the framework of this program, arrested 1,127 people and took out of circulation some 50 kilograms of drugs.
