New elections in Greece will be held on June 25

Athens, May 30 (Prensa Latina) New legislative elections will be held in Greece on June 25, the country's presidency announced Monday through a decree.

In the elections, the party of former Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will seek to increase the simple majority obtained last May 21 when his organization New Democracy (ND), achieved a wide victory, but fell short of an absolute majority and stated that it was not possible to form a government.

His political force reached then 40.8 of the votes, 20 points ahead of his main adversary, the left-wing Syriza party of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

These new elections will be held under a different electoral system and the winner will rightfully obtain up to 50 seats in the Assembly, so Mitsotakis could reach an absolute majority.

Pending the new elections, an interim government headed by senior magistrate Ioannis Sarmas was appointed.
