Iran formally applies to join the BRICS group

Cape Town, South Africa, Jun 2 (Prensa Latina) Iran's Foreign Minister, Hosein Amirabdolahian, formally requested his South African counterpart, Grace Naledi Pandor, to assess the possible incorporation of Iran into the BRICS group.

“Organizations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the BRICS can play a very important role in the new world order that is taking shape,” the diplomat remarked.

Iran attends a BRICS meeting for the first time, and this time it does so as a guest country.

The foreign ministers are discussing the possible launch of a common currency and the expansion of the group, which some 19 countries hope to join, including the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The event will serve to promote a new multilateralism in the world and its agenda includes preparations for the next Summit of Heads of State and Government of the economic bloc.

The ministerial meeting is key for the organization and is part of the readiness for the Summit of Heads of State of the BRICS that will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, between August 22nd and 24th.
