Bolivia seizes millions in fuel with Plan Soberania

La Paz, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) The seizure of almost 35 million bolivianos (roughly five million dollars) in two months in border areas confirms the relevance of the Plan Soberania ("Sovereignty Plan") against fuel smuggling, an official source said.

According to the authorities, the Plan aims to prevent diverting to illegal activities around 250 million litters of hydrocarbons.

The director of the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH), Germán Jiménez, confirmed that “the savings in subsidies due to the reduction in the illegal commercialization of fuels amounts to 22 million bolivianos (over three million dollars).”

Jiménez informed the press that storage tanks, barrels, oil drums, motor pumps, buildings, 10 tanks, 225 vehicles and 264 jugs were also seized during the operations.

Supreme decrees 4910 and 4911 entered into force in April with the objective of achieving savings of more than one billion dollars a year by way of fighting smugglers of subsidized Bolivian fuel sold at a price almost 10 times greater once taken to border countries.

Statistics reveal that between 2017 and 2020 the sum of fuel seized did not exceed 300,000 liters; 370,000 liters were seized in 2022, while 350,000 liters were decommissioned in just two months of the current year, equivalent to 1.2 million bolivianos (171,000 dollars) within the framework of Plan Soberanía.

Since last April, the mobilized forces have carried out 1,190 operations, sealed off four service stations and apprehended 97 persons, according to reports.
