Colombia has new strategy for bird conservation

Bogotá, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) The Ministry of Environment confirmed today with the participation of various sectors of the country, the establishment in Colombia of a new National Strategy for the Conservation of Birds (ENCA 2030).

According to the Ministry, local and ethnic communities, representatives of productive sectors, young people, women leaders and the scientific community contributed to the definition of ENCA 2030,

The process, which required about two years of work, was led by the National Audubon Society, the Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute, the National Birdwatchers Network and the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.

The new document is an update of the ENCA built in 2000 and its is strategic because, after 20 years, the achievements, successes and challenges were evaluated and renewed goals were set for the next 20 years, adjusted to the new national reality.

The great achievement of ENCA 2030 was to develop a proposal that strengthens conservation opportunities for birds and their habitats.

Colombia’s Environment Minister, Susana Muhamad, stated that “being the number one bird country in the world gives us a great responsibility to protect this immense wealth.
