Cuba recognizes at UNESCO G-77’s commitment to cultural diversity

Paris, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's Ambassador to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Yahima Esquivel, presented on Tuesday the commitment by the Group of 77 (G-77) plus China, a bloc her country presides over this year to respect cultural diversity.

Addressing the Ninth Conference of State Parties to the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of Cultural Diversity of Expressions in this capital, Esquivel stated that this commitment was included in the statement the group’s culture ministers made during a meeting held in Havana on May 4.

At that forum, the ministers stressed both the importance of respecting cultural diversity globally and the need to promote intercultural talks and mutual learning based on friendship, solidarity, and international cooperation, she added.

According to Esquivel, the meeting held in Havana of the G-77 plus China, a mechanism made up of 134 of 193 State members of the United Nations, also promoted the inclusion of a specific sustainable development goal related to culture in the post-2030 agenda.

They also highlighted the role of culture and creative industries as catalysts for sustainable development, transformation, and social inclusion and the importance of implementing joint initiatives in the framework of South-South cooperation.
