Spain highlights relevance of global health for development

Madrid, Jun 14 (Prensa Latina) The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albares, today valued the importance of global health for human development.

“Spain considers global health as a priority to achieve human development and the welfare of our societies (…), Albares said at the beginning of the Conference on the Impact of Vaccination in the World.

The event, organized for the first time by the Spanish government and GAVI (Vaccine Alliance), is meeting until Thursday in Madrid to analyze the progress made in guaranteeing the access of the population of 57 low-income countries to vaccines that can contribute to reducing mortality.

Also speaking at the opening of the event were GAVI Director General Seth Berkley, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus, and UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.

Conference sessions will focus on GAVI’s progress toward its global immunization goals, the importance of collaboration with the private sector, emerging immunization priorities such as HPV and malaria, and how the Alliance can help combat climate change.
