European Commission seeks permission to negotiate batteries

Brussels, Jun 15 (Prensa Latina) The European Commission (EC) requested permission to the countries of Europe to establish an agreement with the United States on batteries for electric cars.

The statement specified that the request to the governments of the European Union (EU) seeks negotiations with Washington for a deal on critical minerals that would allow European manufacturers of electric vehicles to benefit.

The idea is to apply a US inflation law, which grants tax favors of up to seven thousand 500 dollars per vehicle, if their batteries contain a percentage of minerals extracted or processed in North America (in 2027 it should be up to 80 percent).

However, the law also allows companies from countries with which the United States concludes a critical minerals treaty to access the aid. In any case, some analysts see this as a European dependence on the North American nation and are concerned about its impact on trade.

Such an agreement will also allow access to U.S. tax benefits for electric vehicle manufacturers whose batteries contain minerals mined or processed in the EU.

European companies will thus be able to compete on better terms in the U.S. market and with companies from Chile, South Korea and Japan, with whom Washington already has critical mineral agreements.
