Prime Minister congratulates Prensa Latina on its 64th anniversary

marrero
St. Petersburg, Russia, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) Manuel Marrero, Cuba's Prime Minister, congratulated today the workers of the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina, which is celebrating its 64th anniversary.

He, who is attending the 26th International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, reminded on Twitter that the Agency was founded in 1959, guided by Ernesto Che Guevara, to inform the reality of Latin America and the world.

On Twitter, Roberto Morales, Secretary of Organization of the Communist Party of Cuba, also congratulated Prensa Latina and highlighted its work as “the voice of the truth of Cuba and the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean for the world, a more necessary mission today than ever”.

In order to face the campaign of lies and demonization against the emerging Cuban Revolution, Prensa Latina was created on June 16, 1959 as part of what was called Operation Truth.

This was an initiative of historic leaders Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara, together with Cuban and Latin American journalists, including the Argentine Jorge Ricardo Masetti, its first director, who along with the founders defended the precept that “we are objective, but not impartial because between good and evil one cannot be impartial”.

Although a short time of existence was predicted, or even the governments of the region were asked to close their offices, it is a fact that the agency currently has offices in nearly 40 countries and thousands of readers in more than 60 countries.

An average of 400 news dispatches reach the “world cast” telling the reality of the people, and diving into those stories that the transnational media companies do not tell.
