Chile to conduct plan to protect the homeless

Santiago de Chile, Jun 20 (Prensa Latina) Chile´s Social Development and Family Ministry is presently keeping as many as 2,120 beds available in 106 shelters so as to provide protection to down-and-outers in winter.

According to the Undersecretary of Social Services Francisca Perales, 45 new shelters will be opened next week, in order to increase capacity to 900.

Protege Calle (Protect the Street) Program provides shelter and basic healthcare services to street people in order to mitigate negative health effects generated by sleeping outdoors.

Health authorities also activated the so-called ¨Code Blue¨ which helps the homeless to die of hypothermia in regions where temperature drops by over 5 degrees Celsius.

In the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, the Presidential delegate Constanza Martínez said Chile has about 490 shelters available.
