La Paz, Jun 23 (Prensa Latina) Bolivia and Spain are preparing cooperation to fight against transnational organized crime, after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on this issue by the Public Ministries of both countries.

The document was signed by Juan Lanchipa, Bolivia’s attorney general, and his Spanish counterpart, Álvaro García.

“The Bolivian Public Ministry recognizes the importance of strengthening and developing cooperation between the two prosecutor’s offices to effectively fight crime that crosses borders,” Lanchipa said in an institutional bulletin, circulated to the press. He added that the understanding provides for the defense of fundamental human rights and procedural guarantees.

On the basis of the document, the parties will coordinate the investigative work in criminal cases and will carry out exchanges of good practices, as well as training for specialized personnel.

In accordance with the agreement, the collaboration will focus on the timely attention of international criminal assistance, and promotion of the investigation against organized and cross-border crime, especially in regard to human trafficking in all its forms.

The agreement also includes cooperation in combating the illegal trafficking of migrants, narcotic and psychotropic substances, money laundering, computer crimes and others that represent a serious threat to society.

The prosecutor’s offices will define their legal collaboration policies in modalities of information exchange on the progress of criminal proceedings initiated, exchange of opinions regarding the development of organized crime, protection of human rights, fundamental freedoms and procedural guarantees.

The parties agreed to carry out general legal consultations in relation to the preparatory, development and execution phases of requests for transnational criminal assistance.
