Memorial to former female political prisoners in Uruguay

Montevideo, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) The names of almost 1,800 women are engraved on the memorial to Uruguay's former female political prisoners, which stands in this capital, near the Legislative Palace. It is one of the initiatives that took place here in the midst of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the coup d'état of June 1973, and in the desire that with this memory never again state terrorism should claim victims in this South American country.

There are 1,758 names engraved on the metal, but not all of them are there, only those who were prosecuted by the military “justice” that prevailed in those years of dictatorship (1973-1985), when the South American tyrannies got together to commit crimes against humanity coordinated in the Condor Plan.

The memorial has 20 pillars, 19 representing each department of the country and one more to recognize the struggle of all the women: girls, young women, mothers and grandmothers who fought,” as explained by Ivonne Klingler, member of the collective of Ex Political Prisoners of Uruguay.
