Doubts and reluctance on Sweden’s accession to NATO

Brussels, Jul 4 (Prensa Latina) Hungary will give the green light to Sweden's accession to NATO if Turkey does so, but from Ankara there are doubts today about whether the new partner would be a burden for the military alliance, or not.

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjarto affirmed to the press, “if there is any progress we will naturally keep our promise not to delay the entry of any country.”

Szijjarto explained that he personally is in “close contact” with Turkish FM Hakan Fidan, with whom he will hold talks, as Ankara is negotiating with Stockholm and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on the issue.

Hungarian FM reiterated that the decision is of the MPs of the National Assembly and that the Government has already submitted to the House the document to approve the Swedish candidacy in that body, where “Fidesz,” the party of Prime Minister Viktor Orban has a two-thirds majority.

At the beginning of the deployment in the neighboring nation at the request of the governments of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Sweden and neighboring Finland applied for NATO membership.

The latter has already achieved its goal, while Sweden continues to await the approval of Turkey and Hungary, two nations that for different reasons have not validated that option yet.
