El Paso gunman sentenced to 90 life term for Walmart shooting

Washington, Jul 7 (Prensa Latina) The gunman who killed 23 people and injured more than two dozen others in a 2019 mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso was sentenced Friday to 90 consecutive life sentences.

Patrick Crusius, 24, also wounded 22 other people during the shooting.

Some victims’ family members became tearful as they confronted Crusius for the first time in court, vilifying him as an “ignorant coward,” an “evil parasite,” a “monster” and “a racist.”

Crusius pleaded guilty in February to 23 counts of committing hate crime resulting in death and an equal number of counts of using a gun to commit murder during a crime of violence.

In addition, he pleaded 22 counts related to a hate crime involving an attempt to kill.

Without enough life to serve such a sentence, Crusius still faces capital murder counts at a state court and could be sentenced to death penalty if convicted.

According to reports filed against Crusius, on August 3, 2019, he drove to the Walmart carrying an AK-47 rifle and 1,000 rounds.

Once at the store he opened fire from outside and immediately dashed in to wound and execute those who crossed in front of him.

“I came here to kill Mexicans,” he said when he was arrested, and when he turned himself in to the police he shouted “I´m the shooter”.

El Paso mass shooting has been the worst one in the United States in the last five years.
