Current trends show non-compliance with 2030 agenda – ECOSOC

ecosoc1
United Nations, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina)The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on Monday unfolded that if current trends continue, the 2030 Agenda will not be fulfilled given 575 million people are being trapped in abject poverty and average global temperature is above pre-industrial levels.

The ECOSOC High Level Political Forum (HLPF) stressed that thermometers are already hovering around 1.1 degrees Celsius, and are likely to reach or exceed the critical tipping point of 1.5 degrees by 2035.

An ECOSOC meeting, which began on Monday through July 20, lays out the roadmap to help nations get back on track, engaging member states, civil society, industry leaders and innovators in a series of ministerial sessions.

Attendees will focus on five of the 17 Goals and make recommendations during the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit, scheduled for September.

ECOSOC Chair Stoeva Lachezara expressed confidence they will be able to mobilize attention under the slogan Accelerating Recovery after Covid-19.

The UN is accelerating the race to achieve the SDGs by increasing access to safe water, sanitation and electricity, when at least two billion people live without safe water services and 733 million lack electricity.
