Santiago de Chile, Jul 20 (Prensa Latina) On the 50th anniversary of the coup d'état, the Chilean Government on Thursday launched the Trees of Memory project in homage to the victims of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973-1990).

The initiative is goal-centered to sow thousands of native plants across the country as a byword of remembering the past, said its organizers.

Chilean Vice President Carolina Toha, along with several ministers and social organizations, participated in launching the plan at the Tres y Cuatro Alamos known spot, which had served as a detention and torture center during the Pinochet regime.

It is estimated that over 6,000 prisoners had been held there from 1974 to 1977, by the time that place had been managed by the police and the National Intelligence Directorate (DINA), Pinochet’s secret police.

According to reports by the Truth Commission, the figure of victims during the 17 years of dictatorship had been over 40,000 people, including those murdered, detained, missing, imprisoned and tortured.
