Agreement seeks to guarantee education quality in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, Jul 25 (Prensa Latina) Yesterday, the Dominican Ministry of Education (Minerd) and the National Association of Teachers signed an agreement that seeks to guarantee fulfillment with the school calendar and school hours, in all public schools in the country.

The website of the Presidency indicated that the head of that portfolio, Angel Hernandez, and the president of the referred group, Eduardo Hidalgo, signed the agreement at the National Palace, in the presence of President Luis Abinader.

The agreement establishes the salary increase for retired and pensioned teachers, which will be by stages, starting this year; the reorganization of the sector’s personnel and the strengthening of the dialogue tables to reach a consensus on the solutions to the problems of education.

The Minerd also committed to raise the salaries of teachers in the Pre-University Education System as of 2024 – the percentage of which will be defined that year – and to pay an incentive to the directors of the centers.

Likewise, the two parties will support the program for the expansion of coverage and quality in the second cycle of the initial level; the literacy plan and all the pedagogical initiatives of institutional transformation and modernization promoted by the aforementioned Ministry to overcome the gaps in learning.

Regarding the agreement, President Abinader said that it will have a positive impact on teaching schedules, salaries, pensions and access to health services for teachers since two hospitals will also be built in the South and East.

The dignitary considered that it is a pact in which only the country wins because it brings justice to the teachers and also tranquility to the educational sector, which will allow, working together in order, to raise the quality of education.

In this sense, he thanked the Teachers’ Association for defending their union and acknowledged the Ombudsman, Pablo Ulloa, for serving as a mediator in these conversations.

The Head of State said that this dialogue creates the scenario to be able to discuss the concerns that may arise with a view to improving education, which is essential for the development of the country.
