Friends of Cuba celebrate National Rebelliousness Day in Colombia

Bogotá, Jul 27 (Prensa Latina) Friends of Cuba in Colombia on Wednesday celebrated the 70th anniversary of the assault to the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes garrisons, events that marked the definitive stage of the revolutionary struggle in Cuba.

Organized by the Colombian Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, the celebration became a reaffirmation of the group’s support for the Revolution led by Fidel Castro.

In statements to Prensa Latina, Cuban Ambassador to Colombia Javier Caamaño recalled that “July 26, 1953, was a turning point from which Cubans, for the first time in history, are the ones who decide what happens in the country.”

What that group of revolutionaries, led by Fidel, Abel Santamaría and Army General Raúl Castro, did was the moment that marked that beginning, he recalled.

Although a military victory was not achieved at that time, “the doors were opened for all Cubans to realize that the Revolution we have today was possible and necessary,” he emphasized.

The diplomat praised the figure of Fidel Castro, not only for his role in that liberation deed, but in all the great achievements attained by the Cuban people since the January 1, 1959, triumph.

He thanked the Colombians who shared with Cuba this celebration on National Rebelliousness Day, which took place in the Codema auditorium in Bogotá.

For his part, Juan Camilo Viana, a Colombian doctor who graduated in Cuba, stressed that to speak about Cuba is to speak about dignity, resistance and self-determination and is an example to follow.

“For me, Cuba is an invitation to fight for a new world,” said the young Colombian doctor.
