Army delivers bridge to Colombian community affected by landslides

Bogota, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) Yesterday, the Colombian Army delivered to the community a temporary bridge that will help restore mobility between the departments of Meta and Cundinamarca, obstructed after an avalanche.

After eight days of arduous work, Army engineers completed the bridge, which is a 54.86 meter long temporary modular metal structure.

In the early morning of the 17th of this month, an avalanche in the community of Quetame left 29 dead and six injured, as well as considerable material damage.

Following the disaster, the governor of Cundinamarca, Nicolás García Bustos, declared a state of public calamity in order to have the resources to attend the families affected by the phenomenon.

As a result of the emergency, the president of the country, Gustavo Petro, visited the place and participated in a Unified Command Post in the municipality of Quetame, department of Cundinamarca, scene of the avalanche.

The governor pointed out that one measure in the face of this disaster is the more general relocation of populations from some of the urban centers, and others from the rural villages, along the canyon, tasks that must be carried out respecting the productive base of the families.

He also considered that this emergency was caused, among other elements, by the instability of the mountain range, which is still young, and by the action of man.

For this reason, he said, one of the measures to face the problem is in the hands of the environmental authorities and another is to observe the zone to look for stability through reforestation policies much more substantial than the existing ones.
