Crackdown on gangs will continue in El salvador – Defense Minister

San Salvador, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) Salvadoran Defense Minister Rene Merino Monroy said on Tuesday that the crackdown on gangs will continue, since around 20% to 30% of gangers are still operating on the streets.

Merino told 21 channel local television that such figure must be added to the approximately 72,000 criminals who have already been arrested.

He assured that Cabañas Department was cordoned off, the military and officers have already arrested 56 alleged criminals, and seized weapons that were hidden in the wild areas.

The Armed Forces found Monday night a buried sub-machine gun, a 9mm 12-cartridge clip and a M49A1 surface flare grenade in the Santa Lucia hamlet, Maquilishuat canton, in Ilobasco, in Cabañas.

Meanwhile, the National Civil Police reported that during Tuesday´s wee hours, they killed an MS-13 gang member and caught a second alleged criminal, after a clash in the San Vicente Department.
