La Porta was located on the Greek island of Corfu by investigators from the Carabinieri, who identified him in images of the celebration of the Napoli Football Club’s victory in the national championship in early May.
The 60-year-old gangster is linked to the Neapolitan group known as La Camorra and was among the 100 most wanted criminals since he was sentenced in absentia to 14 years in prison for systematic tax evasion, fraud, swindling and money laundering on behalf of the Contini clan.
Coordination between the police forces of both nations led to his arrest last Friday, after which the Italian justice system initiated the process for his repatriation.
“He was betrayed by his passion for soccer and for the Napoli team,” as “with the championship victory, La Porta could not resist celebrating,” Italian authorities said in the statement announcing his capture.
