Opposition to challenge Bukele’s reelection

San Salvador, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) The opposition in El Salvador, both from the right and the left wings, will challenge President Nayib Bukele's reelection on February 4, 2024, international commentators noted on Tuesday.

Although the president seems unbeatable at the elections, even with the alleged unconstitutionality of his aspiration, there are many who see loopholes in the Nuevas Ideas party, such as its current contradictions after its internal election process, which could affect the reelectionist plan of the standard bearer of that party.

On the right, Joel Sánchez, presidential candidate from the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), stands out. He presents himself as a figure promoted by civil society and that the ARENA party will take under its wing.

Sánchez officially became ARENA’s candidate on July 10 and one of his main appeals to his compatriots is “unity” in the search for a positive result in the 2024 elections, as he said in an interview with the newspaper La Prensa Grafica (LPG).

I am joining a citizen’s movement that gives me the power to be exposed to political parties and in this case, to join the ARENA project and participate in the presidential elections, he added.

The businessman thinks that in order to defeat Bukele’s reelectionist plan “the most important thing will be to close ranks, to join efforts, because as opposition we must remain united.”
