Some 26 police officers killed in Haiti this year

Port-au-Prince, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) Some 26 police officers have been killed in Haiti so far this year, Lionel Lazarre, general coordinator of the National Union of Haitian Police Officers, denounced.

Most deaths were reported in the West department, where the capital is located, the union leader told the Matin Débat program on Monday.

He recalled that the most recent case took place on Sunday, when police officer Eddy Dorisca, member of the 14th promotion of the institution, was killed in an exchange of fire with members of armed gangs in Grand Ravine, at the southern exit of Port-au-Prince.

Residents of Carrefour Feuilles who demonstrated in the capital on Monday to denounce insecurity and violence demanded that the Government open an investigation into the officer’s murder and demanded justice for the officer and his family.

Lazarre regretted that police officers are recurrent victims of violence and demanded that the competent authorities adopt measures to reinforce the operational capacity of the forces of law and order, which will allow them to fulfill their mission to protect and serve.
