South Africa condemns events associated with taxi drivers’ strike

Pretoria, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) South African Transport Minister Lydia Sindisiwe Chikunga on Tuesday condemned the violence and illegal acts associated with the cab drivers' strike in Cape Town, in the southern province of Western Cape.

In a public appearance, Chikunga expressed concern over the seizure of cabs by Cape Town authorities.

The Minister has been actively involved in the talks between leaders of the provincial government, the City of Cape Town itself, and the cab industry to address the protest and guarantee the ongoing presence of these vehicles in the city.

Recently, one man was shot dead and three were injured in the town of Nyanga amid the cab drivers’ strike.

In addition, several vehicles were set on fire and other shootings were reported, allegedly related to the protest.
