Chinese Foreign Minister kicks off visit to Southeast Asia

Wang-Yi-2
Beijing, Aug 10 (Prensa Latina) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit Singapore, Malaysia and Cambodia in order to strengthen cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative on the tenth anniversary of that mega-project launched by China.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Wang Yi’s agenda extends until August 13.

“Southeast Asian countries have been at the forefront of advancing the vision of building a community with a shared future for humankind, and are our important partners for Belt and Road cooperation,” said the statement, which emphasized the good state of relations with Singapore, Malaysia and Cambodia. It also predicted a new impetus of strategic communication with these nations.

“China is willing to work with the three countries to implement the World Development Initiative, the World Security Initiative and the World Civilization Initiative,” in order to “advance economic recovery, safeguard peace and tranquility, deepen exchanges and mutual learning, and make an even greater contribution to the peace, stability and development in the region,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The Belt and Road Initiative is a mega-project proposed in 2013 by Chinese President Xi Jinping to promote the creation of infrastructure and interconnection among the countries of Asia, Africa and Europe.

The plan is extending to other geographical regions, and its initial objectives, which were economic and commercial at its inception, now include dialogue between peoples, cultural and scientific exchange, green development, among other fields.
