Afghanistan has the right to a peaceful future – UN

Afganistan
United Nations, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) The people of Afghanistan have the right to a peaceful and harmonious future and that the de facto authorities, the Taliban, have an obligation to ensure that this right is realized, the UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres said.

On the occasion of the second anniversary of the return to power of the extremist group, several UN bodies confirmed the disastrous consequences of the period, particularly for the preservation of human rights.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed insisted on women and girls as one of the sectors most harmed by the regime.

“We cannot forget the people of Afghanistan, we must amplify their voices in the fight for their rights to education and work,” she stressed.

The Taliban have left no aspect of women’s lives intact, no freedom, said Sima Bahous, head of UN Women. She called on all actors to unite to support Afghan women in every way, in particular to fund the services they desperately need.

The Taliban government marked its second year back in power in Afghanistan on Tuesday, following the withdrawal of U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops in 2021.

Although authorities themselves describe it as a “return to security in the country”, civil society and international organizations recognize the elimination of human rights, especially against women and girls who pay the highest price.
